A Report on the “Hidden Disabilities” of Bullied Manga Artist Yamada Hanako

1. Introduction

Autism was once described as “a modern intractable disease for which no cure is known, with approximately two cases per 10,000 children under the age of 18” (Yomiuri Shimbun, April 16, 1977, Morning Edition). However, subsequent research recognized that autistic characteristics exist along a continuum ranging from mild to severe, leading to the conceptualization of these conditions under the broader category of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As diagnostic frameworks expanded and awareness increased, the estimated prevalence of autism has risen significantly over time. According to a 2012 survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in elementary and junior high schools across Japan, the proportion of students who may exhibit developmental disabilities approached approximately one in fifteen. This suggests that autism and developmental disabilities—once perceived by many as unrelated to their own lives—have become issues of broader social relevance.

The book examined in this report, Hidden Disabilities: Manga Artist Hanako Yamada by Ishikawa Gen (Iwanami Shoten, September 2001), presents a clinical study that analyzes, from a psychiatric perspective, the difficult life experienced by the late manga artist Hanako Yamada, who ultimately died by suicide, in relation to her developmental disability. At the same time, the work functions as a critical reflection on a society that has tended to “conceal” the difficulties of individuals who struggle to form stable interpersonal relationships due to social awkwardness, interpreting such difficulties primarily as “mental” or personality problems rather than as manifestations of cognitive or developmental differences.

Drawing on the arguments advanced by the author, psychiatrist Ishikawa Gen, this report is structured as follows. Section 2 traces the trajectory of Yamada’s life from her childhood to her eventual suicide. Section 3 examines the nature and characteristics of Yamada’s developmental disability. Section 4 analyzes the concepts of “the overt problem child” and “the covert problem child,” derived from Yamada’s manga works, in order to explore the sources of her psychological distress. Finally, Section 5 summarizes the central issues raised by the book and offers concluding observations.

2. The Life of Yamada Hanako

Hanako Yamada won the Chiba Tetsuya Award in 1987 following her spectacular debut in Young Magazine, but constant friction with her editor led to the end of her serialization. She subsequently focused her activities on the niche magazine Garo, but in the spring of 1992, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and hospitalized for about two and a half months. She was discharged in May of that year, but on the evening of the following day, she jumped to her death from the 11th floor of a high-rise apartment complex. She completed a mere two volumes during her lifetime. Even in newspaper obituaries, she was reported not as a “manga artist” but as “Ms. A, an unemployed Tama City resident.”

The catalyst for Yamada Hanako’s name becoming widely known was her inclusion as an example of “suicide by jumping” in The Complete Suicide Manual (Tsurumi Wataru, Ohta Publishing), which became a bestseller. This led to her gaining attention, particularly among teenagers. Subsequently, Pre-Suicide Diary (a compilation of notes and diary entries from her lifetime; a re-edited version of the privately published Yamada Hanako Diary edited by her father, published by Ohta Publishing in 1996; a reprint edition edited by Yuichi Akada is currently available from Tetsujin-sha) became a bestseller. This section will provide a detailed account of Yamada’s life.

2-1. Childhood to Elementary School Years

Hanako Yamada (real name: Takaichi Yumi) was born in Tokyo in 1967 to a mother who was an elementary school teacher and a father who was a car salesman (and later became a Trotskyist writer). (Sidenote: Another female manga artist associated with the Garo movement, Nekojiru, was also born in 1967 and similarly took her own life.) She appears to have been a shy child from an early age; rather than playing with friends, she was drawn to picture books and manga, and was an unconventional girl who was passionate about raising insects. Her strengths and weaknesses were polar opposites: while she was terrible at group activities, she possessed a richer vocabulary than anyone else and had her head in the clouds, crafting her own picture books featuring baby squirrels as the main characters. She reportedly read Sasaki Maki’s picture book Yappari Okami (Fukuinkan Shoten)—which depicts a lonely wolf ignored by everyone—over and over again until it fell apart.

Yappari Okami tells the story of a lonely wolf who wanders around looking for friends, wondering, “Is there anyone out there like me?” However, since everyone is afraid of the wolf and avoids him, he is unable to make any friends. When the wolf climbs alone to the roof of a building, he finds a hot air balloon tied down with a rope. Although he could have boarded it to vanish from this world, the wolf remains on the rooftop, watching the balloon as its rope is untied and it drifts off into the distance. The story ends with the wolf muttering, “After all, I am a wolf, aren’t I? I have no choice but to live as a wolf,”. Ishikawa reportedly provided a clinical psychologist with only the information that "there is a child who, during their early years, read this picture book repeatedly until it was worn to tatters"—without disclosing any other details or attributes—and requested an assessment of that child's personality traits based on a blind analysis; the resulting profile, it is said, was a perfect match for Yamada Hanako herself (Ishikawa 2001, p. 267).

Yamada Hanako was observant, kept consistently good grades since elementary school, and had no particular intellectual difficulties (which is why her disability was overlooked); however, she struggled with interpersonal communication and forming relationships. Her homeroom teachers described her as “very quiet and rarely assertive” (second grade, first semester), “she will talk if spoken to, but she almost never speaks to the class on her own” (second semester of second grade), “a child who seems not to be listening but understands everything” (second semester of fifth grade), “she has sufficient comprehension but is easily distracted and lacks concentration. However, she has strong likes and dislikes and becomes fully absorbed in things she enjoys” (first semester of sixth grade), and “She lacks concentration. Despite this, she answers questions correctly quite often,” as noted in her report cards.

Yamada’s autistic tendencies were already apparent around this time, but I infer that the comment in her second-grade second-semester report card—“She will talk when spoken to”—indicates a passive type of autism spectrum disorder (Asperger’s syndrome), specifically an introverted type who “does not actively seek to engage with others but does not reject interaction and engages passively.” Because this type is obedient but lacks assertiveness, they tend to take on unfavorable roles (Yamada, for example, was once pressured into buying a futon worth 100,000 yen through a door-to-door sales pitch) and are often perceived as lacking initiative and being indecisive. Of course, this book also points out the connection between Yamada Hanako and Asperger’s syndrome, but the author does not go so far as to specify a particular subtype, such as “Asperger’s [specific subtype].”

2-2. From Middle School to Suicide

In her second year of middle school, she was bullied and attempted suicide by gas. Shortly thereafter, she stopped attending school, but on her mother’s recommendation that “it would be better to devote herself to something,” she joined the “Manga School” section of Nakayoshi magazine. In her third year of middle school, her work Bright Friends, submitted under the pen name “Uramachi Kamome,” was selected as an honorable mention in the Nakayoshi Gag Manga Grand Prix.

In 1983, Bright Friends was published in the January issue of Nakayoshi Deluxe, and her debut work The Children of the Oyama Family appeared in the April issue. Starting with the May issue, she began serializing Ningen Shinbo da (running through the June 1984 issue).

Her early style was reminiscent of Hisaichi Ishii’s four-panel gag manga featuring cute, stylized art, differing significantly from her later style. However, even at this stage, Yamada’s tendency to depict the darker aspects of human nature (such as bullying and peer pressure) was evident throughout her work.

After middle school, she enrolled in Tachikawa Girls’ High School and simultaneously began serializing Ningen Shinbo da in Nakayoshi Deluxe. However, she seemed unable to adjust to school life and continued to be bullied. She eventually dropped out of high school after one year and transferred to a correspondence course (NHK Gakuen). Around this time, she began reading Garo (Seirindo) and became a fan of artists such as Ebisu Yoshikazu, Suehiro Maruo, and Hanawa Kazuichi, though she was particularly influenced by Nemoto Kei. She was an avid reader of the adult vending machine magazine EVE.

Inspired by Takasugi Dan’s book I Want to Be the Media (Takasugi was the founding editor-in-chief of the legendary fanzines Jam and HEAVEN), she developed an interest in design and editing, passed the High School Equivalency Exam, and enrolled in a design vocational school. She also developed an interest in indie music, frequently attending live shows.

Later, in 1987 while still attending the vocational school, her submission God’s Pranks to Young Magazine (Kodansha) was selected as an honorable mention for the Chiba Tetsuya Award and was subsequently serialized. The story centered on the theme of bullying, and her art style shifted from her Nakayoshi days into something more grotesque. However, she struggled to gain support from the general readership; her popularity in reader surveys consistently ranked last, and her editor scolded her, reportedly saying, “There’s no story, no climax, and no punchline. The plot doesn’t make sense. If you want to draw something like this, do it in a doujinshi. Are you taking the readers for fools?”

Yamada had originally intended to depict her “meaningless, contradictory” daily life in her manga, so her editor’s direction clashed with hers. Nevertheless, fearing she would be sidelined, Yamada put on a show of obedience and pretended to follow her editor’s instructions by adding punchlines to her stories. However, she gradually began to harbor ill will toward her editor, filling her diary with vitriol directed at the editor for “trying to control [me] by substituting his own personal views for the general public’s ‘common sense.’” From the latter half of the serialization onward, she even stopped taking notes during meetings. Furthermore, after the serialization ended, she began spreading accusations that she had been sexually harassed and made repeated prank calls to her editor (notably, works from this period also feature protagonists who are rebellious toward society. For details, see Section 3).

Since her debut, Yamada serialized works in multiple publications, ranging from the mainstream Young Magazine to the niche magazine Garo, while also actively pursuing activities outside the world of manga, including television, radio, film, theater troupes, and parties. However, around 1991, she began exhibiting eccentric behavior, such as suddenly walking away in the middle of conversations, obsessively taking notes, engaging in extreme dieting, and ignoring her younger sister. Although the number of manga she published decreased, Yamada continued to submit work to Garo every month without fail. However, due to Garo’s chronic financial difficulties, she went unpaid for all of it. Yamada concluded that it was impossible to make a living from manga alone (though the nearly 8 million yen in savings left after her death suggests she may have suffered from an excessive and pathological anxiety about her livelihood). After being rejected from more than ten job interviews, she began working part-time at a coffee shop around July 1991. However, she was inept at her job, repeatedly making order mistakes, and began behaving erratically—such as showing up for work on her days off and refusing to leave—which led to her dismissal in February 1992. Nevertheless, because she attempted to continue working at the cafe even after receiving the dismissal notice, the police were notified, and her father brought her back home. However, the next day she became delirious and received emergency treatment at a clinic, which included the administration of antipsychotic medication and intramuscular injections. Suspected of having schizophrenia, she was admitted to Sakuragaoka Memorial Hospital on March 4th, 1992.

Her condition improved, and she was discharged from the hospital on May 23rd of that year; however, on the evening of the following day, May 24th, she attempted suicide by jumping from the 11th floor of a housing complex in Hino (Yamada had lived in Tama City until she was 21). On May 22nd, the day before her discharge, she had written the following passage in her diary titled “Reasons I Want to Die.”

1. At my age, I’m still helping with housework. It’s embarrassing, I’m a burden, a good-for-nothing.

2. I haven’t made a single friend (since childhood).

3. My future looks bleak. I can’t find a job (I get bullied).

4. I can’t draw manga anymore = I have no reason to live.

5. My family makes me eat. I hate gaining weight.

6. I have no motivation to do anything anymore. Everything is just exhausting (feeling of helplessness, lethargy).

7. My episodes of “existential anxiety” are agonizing.

At the time, her suicide was covered in the local newspaper with the following details.

Woman Jumps to Her Death from 11th Floor of Housing Complex

On the night of the 24th, in Hino City, at Block 1, Lot 5-3 of the Japan Housing and Urban Development Corporation’s “Hyakuso Housing Complex,” a resident found a woman lying on the second-floor roof and dialed 110. The woman was identified as Ms. A (24), an unemployed resident of Tama City, who died shortly thereafter. A chair was found in the 11th-floor hallway, and it appears she used it to climb over the railing and jump. (According to the Hino Police Station)

3. The True Nature of Hidden Disabilities

Children with intellectual disabilities, whose condition is immediately apparent, are treated as individuals with special needs and are often the focus of protective measures. On the other hand, developmental disorders (ASD, LD, ADHD) are often detected late because no apparent intellectual deficits are visible. The anguish and clumsiness they experience are easily overlooked and seen not as a “disability” but as a “mental” issue or dysfunctional personality. Yamada’s disability was overlooked by those around her and treated as merely a “quirk.” Subsequently, Yamada began obsessively scribbling in her diary about her innate ineptitude, which showed no signs of improvement; her long-standing struggle to adapt to those around her; and her hostility toward everyone except herself (with the exception of the writers she respected). It seems she managed to maintain her sense of self by transforming these experiences into manga material. However, these issues never improved throughout her life. As her diary suggests, she either “endured anxiety alone” or “ended up hurting someone else,” ultimately culminating in her suicide.

Yamada’s diary reveals that she did not understand the rules of games during P.E. class, struggled with group activities and got lost easily, was unable to pick up on nonverbal cues, was awkward at cooperative exercises, lacked an understanding of interpersonal subtleties, experienced frequent misunderstandings in her relationships, and had intense preconceptions (or, due to her keen observational skills, read into situations in ways others could not imagine), repetitive behavior, clumsiness with calculations at cafes, a distinctive inability to read the room, a lack of stress tolerance, and an inability to tolerate the dual nature of society (the gap between true feelings and social facades) or its contradictions. In light of these issues, psychiatrist Ishikawa points out that Yamada may have had a “nonverbal learning disability” (LD). (However, he notes that since Yamada herself did not undergo neuropsychological evaluation during her lifetime, and the clinical evidence consists solely of personal recollections, diaries, and evaluations from questionnaires filled out by her sister, there is no material directly linking to a diagnosis; therefore, this remains merely posthumous speculation).

Before explaining the mechanics behind a non-verbal LD, we must first define LD (Learning Disability). LD is a condition in which, despite the absence of a generalized mental delay and normal or above-average intelligence, there is a critical deficit in a specific learning ability; it is broadly categorized into two types: verbal and non-verbal. In the narrow sense, LD refers to “verbal LD,” which involves difficulties with processes such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and reasoning. On the other hand, “nonverbal LD” refers to a condition in which an individual excels at reading and writing but experiences difficulties with cognitive processing of nonverbal concepts. In particular, nonverbal LD is characterized by poor social skills and significant deficits in perception, judgment, and interpersonal skills; its symptoms closely resemble those of autism spectrum disorder. Ishikawa himself argues that “it would not matter at all if a case diagnosed as nonverbal LD were instead diagnosed as Asperger’s syndrome (autism spectrum disorder)” (Ishikawa 2001, p. 225) (Note that since the publication of this book, the systematization of developmental disorders and the revision of diagnostic criteria in psychiatry have progressed, and in recent years, the term “nonverbal LD” has rapidly fallen out of use). In other words, even if the subtitle of this book were “Manga Artist Yamada Hanako and Asperger’s Syndrome” instead of “Manga Artist Yamada Hanako and Nonverbal LD,” there would be no contradiction whatsoever. Furthermore, Chapter 4 of this book explains that the reason Ishikawa clings to the unfamiliar term “nonverbal LD” is that Yamada’s case was very similar to cases of adult women with nonverbal LD. However, the book’s structure, which is limited to “nonverbal LD”—a concept that has since become niche—feels somewhat outdated, and now, nearly 20 years after its publication, its half-hearted nature is undeniable. It seems to me [Mushizuka Mushizo] that the author’s lack of thoroughness and preconceptions lead to the book’s fatal problems described in Section 5 of this report.

4. “Overt Problem Children” and “Covert Problem Children”

Several of Yamada’s later manga feature a contrast between two characters: Kuriyama Masae, an “overt problem child” (i.e., a child with an intellectual disability), and Yamamoto Yoko, a “covert problem child” (i.e., a child with a developmental disability) who, though outwardly typical, is too mature for her age to join in with the other children and is isolated in class. It should be noted that while the classmates in these works generally view both Masae and Yoko merely as class nuisances, the female homeroom teacher nonetheless uses Masae as an example to eloquently preach an illusion of equality, stating, “You must not discriminate against others” and “There are no useless people in this world.” However, Yoko regards this ideology of human equality with coldness, claiming it “actually makes people unhappy” (some interpret this as a manifestation of her deep distrust toward her mother, who is an elementary school teacher), and directs scathing malice toward Masae as well, saying things like, “Masae is just a human-shaped idiot,” “There’s a common belief that fools have pure hearts, but she’s just a nuisance,” and “Looking at this girl makes me irritable.” (Excerpted from the “Otanchin Series” serialized in Garo from July to December 1990)

4-1. The Coexistence of Discriminatory and Discriminated-Against Perspectives

In Yamada’s earlier manga, most of the protagonists were shy, simple, and reserved—figures who endured relentless injustice without the ability to resist, instead conforming to others with a forced, sheepish smile—essentially embodying the archetype of the “discriminated-against” character. However, in the case of Yamamoto Yoko, the “covert problem child” who appeared in Yamada’s later works, while she is treated with discrimination by her classmates, she is, in turn, discriminatory toward those who seem weaker than herself. She constantly harbors aggressive thoughts toward the outside world or directs cynicism toward it, even exuding an aura of being “on the verge of snapping.” Might Yoko—this entirely new character embodying both a sense of discrimination and a sense of being discriminated against—be a manifestation of a shift in Yamada’s consciousness?

Ishikawa compares the changes in Yamada’s style between his early and later works, noting, “It is suggested that the level of stress she faced in the two years following her debut increased exponentially. In the former, she was simply bewildered and at the mercy of events; in the latter, although she has adopted a defiant stance, she is clearly overwhelmed by anxiety and despair that no one understands her anguish, and her aggression is growing.” Regarding the background behind Yamada’s use of Yoko as a spokesperson to make her engage in relentlessly discriminatory behavior toward Masae, the “overt problem child,” Ishikawa speculates that there is “a scathing attack on the ‘overt problem child’—a figure who, even when bullied, is shielded by teachers— and the deep-seated, twisted, and submerged sense of discrimination felt by the ‘covert problem child,’ who receives neither protection nor sympathy from teachers” (Ishikawa 2001, Chapter 4).

4-2. The Victim Becomes the Bully

This is my personal opinion, but I, too, have experienced unfair treatment bordering on bullying in a toxic environment in the past. At that time, driven by a psychological state where I refused to acknowledge my own “weakness,” I ended up being harsh toward people who seemed weaker than myself. It’s likely that when placed in a situation where one is being discriminated against, one feels compelled to switch sides to the discriminators as a means of self-preservation. In an interview before her death, Yamada stated, “I was both a victim of bullying and a bully.” “The one I can’t forgive the most is probably myself, with all my bad karma…” (Core Magazine’s Super Photo School, May 1990 issue). It is unclear whether Yamada became a bully first or was a victim first, but in any case, it seems certain that what neither she nor I can truly forgive is “ourselves.”

5. Problems with This Book

This book is riddled with problems. For example, in an attempt to identify pathological characteristics in Yamada’s manga, Ishikawa cuts out every panel from a single page, links them to depictions of schizophrenia patients, and attempts to provide detailed explanations for every perspective error, such as “the ratio between the notebook and the pencil case is inconsistent.” However, the book offers absolutely no basic explanation as to whether the analytical methods used in this endeavor have any basis or significance. Furthermore, regarding the “lack of a clear punchline”—a characteristic of Yamada’s style—the book offers no artistic evaluation of it, treating it solely as a symptom of his disorder. It should be noted that The Screw, published in 1968 by Tsuge Yoshiharu—another Garo-affiliated manga artist—is a surreal work based on dreams that is famous for having been subjected to everything from psychiatric analysis to Freudian psychoanalysis. However, just as Tsuge himself described such interpretations as “nothing but a complete misunderstanding,” Ishikawa’s attempt likely does not go beyond the realm of being “completely off the mark” either. However, the biggest problem lies in the fact that after the book’s publication, a rift developed between the bereaved family and Ishikawa, leading to its eventual out-of-print status and disposal. While I wrote at the beginning of this section that this book has “problems throughout,” perhaps I should be more precise. The entire content of this book is problematic.

As one reads through this book, it becomes clear that a strong relationship of trust existed between Ishikawa and the bereaved family; not only did the family actively cooperate with interviews and provide materials, but the book also includes highly private documents such as medical records. Furthermore, Yamada’s sister even agreed to complete the questionnaire used to determine whether Yamada had a nonverbal learning disability (LD); based on the scoring results, which fell significantly below the cutoff score, Ishikawa suggested that Yamada “may have had a nonverbal learning disability.” Regarding the circumstances leading to the book’s discontinuation, in October 2002—one year after its publication—Yamada’s parents published a detailed memoir titled “The Background and Truth Behind the Creation and Publication of Ishikawa Gen’s Hidden Disabilities (Iwanami Shoten)” to Issue 29 of Ax (Seirin Kogeisha). According to the essay, although Ishikawa requested the cooperation of the bereaved family by stating he intended to “write a biography of Yamada Hanako as an artist,” he published the book “without clearly stating his true purpose, keeping it ambiguous throughout, and without presenting us with galley proofs or other materials prior to publication to obtain our final confirmation and consent.” Furthermore, the family was not informed of the book’s contents until after it was published, and the published work turned out to be not a “biography” but a “case study report” concerning neuropsychopathology. Additionally, according to the family, the medical records included in the book were obtained by Ishikawa without permission.

This book sought to uncover the “hidden disability” of Yamada Hanako, who took her own life due to interpersonal conflicts; ironically, however, it sparked a conflict between the author and the bereaved family, resulting in the book being taken out of print. If this was the outcome of the “inability of people to understand one another”—a theme Yamada consistently explored—then the very existence of this book feels cruel. While the phrase “hidden disability” in the book’s title likely did not foreshadow this outcome, the truth about the disability Yamada struggled with has been sealed away along with the book’s discontinuation, remaining so to this day.

Takeaways: A Blurb by Denpa Archivist

A major takeaway from A Report on the “Hidden Disabilities” of Bullied Manga Artist Yamada Hanako is that developmental disabilities can remain invisible and misunderstood, particularly in individuals with normal or above-average intelligence. Unlike intellectual disabilities, conditions such as autism spectrum disorder or nonverbal learning disabilities often go unnoticed because they do not involve obvious cognitive impairment. Yamada performed well academically and had a strong vocabulary, which prevented teachers and others from recognizing her social and communicative difficulties. Her report cards described her as quiet, passive, and easily distracted but intellectually capable. As a result, her struggles with interpersonal engagement were written off as unfavorable personality traits rather than potential signs of developmental difference. The article therefore emphasizes how individuals with “hidden disabilities” can experience profound isolation when their difficulties are not properly recognized.

Another key takeaway concerns the relationship between Yamada’s developmental difficulties and her experiences with bullying and social alienation. From childhood she struggled with group activities and social cues, preferring solitary pursuits such as reading and drawing. The article highlights her repeated reading of Sasaki Maki’s picture book Yappari Okami, which tells the story of a lonely wolf unable to make friends. This story is presented as reflecting Yamada’s own emotional state: a child aware of her difference but unable to understand it. Her isolation intensified in middle school, where she was bullied and attempted suicide. Although she later devoted herself to manga creation, encouraged by her mother as a constructive outlet, her difficulties with social integration persisted. Mushizuka suggests that developmental differences combined with bullying and lack of institutional support contributed to long-term psychological distress.

Mushizuka argues that Yamada’s manga served as a medium through which she processed these experiences of alienation. Even in her early gag manga for Nakayoshi, her work depicted darker aspects of human relationships. These themes became more explicit in later works such as the Otanchin Series in Garo. In these stories, Kuriyama Masae represents an “overt problem child” with an intellectual disability, while Yamamoto Yoko represents a “covert problem child” whose developmental differences are less visible. Although both characters are marginalized, Yoko directs cruelty toward Masae. Mushizuka interprets this dynamic as reflecting the psychological conflict experienced by individuals with hidden disabilities: Yoko is both victim and perpetrator, discriminated against by society yet hostile toward someone even more marginalized. Psychiatrist Ishikawa Gen describes this as the “twisted, submerged sense of discrimination” felt by those who receive neither protection nor sympathy.

Yamada’s struggles intensified in adulthood as she attempted to navigate professional and social expectations. Despite early success in publication, she clashed with editors who criticized her work for lacking conventional narrative structure. Yamada sought to depict the contradictions and meaninglessness of everyday life, but this approach conflicted with commercial expectations. Although she continued publishing in alternative magazines such as Garo, financial instability and repeated job rejections increased her anxiety. The article notes that despite having significant savings, she feared she could not survive financially. Her inability to maintain employment and increasingly erratic behavior further worsened her psychological condition.
