Prologue

Trashing Identifying Information

Let’s start with a scary story.

Throwing away trash carelessly is dangerous. Stop it now.

Take it from me–I’ve spent the last fifteen years since moving to Tokyo rummaging through other people’s trash, night after night, invading many people’s privacy as a hobby.

That’s because trash contains both information about the person who threw it away and their story.

Things used in daily life that become unnecessary, dirty, worn out, or unwanted are carelessly tossed into trash cans and discarded as garbage. And most people, the moment they throw something away, feel completely relieved and forget about it entirely. It seems trash cans also serve the purpose of forgetting before we do.

However, the physical existence of trash certainly doesn’t end there. Until it’s collected by sanitation crews and incinerated at waste disposal factories, it undeniably persists in this world, still carrying significant meaning and information. Just consider the information that could leak if someone were to rummage through it.

For instance, suppose you single out a complete stranger and persistently rummage through their trash.

Within three months, the bulk of that person’s life and daily routine would likely become clear through their discarded items.

Addresses, names, ages, and phone numbers can easily be found in water, electricity, and other bills, as well as in junk mail. Bank and convenience store receipts reveal account numbers, bank balances, and in some cases, monthly income and employer information. Many young people toss pay slips without even shredding them, allowing the name of the company, department, and industry to be determined. Delivery slips and address labels on parcels can reveal the address and phone number of a person’s parents, and sometimes even their familial affairs.

That much is fine. But even deeply personal affairs–infidelity, abortions, things one absolutely would never want others to know about–can be easily exposed from carelessly discarded diaries or letter drafts. The list goes on and on: debt collection notices reveal financial status, while hospital bills, prescription bags, and medical reports expose chronic conditions. You get the idea. Personal secrets are up for grabs in the trash. And for women, the situation takes a darker, more sinister turn.

In this world, there are perverts–few in number, but they exist–who rummage through discarded women’s underwear and used sanitary products, masturbating violently with them night after night. Above all, I am one of them.

To have your trashed underwear rummaged through without your knowledge, to have the shape and size of your anatomy fantasized about based on the stains left behind… To violate one’s privacy without consent, to be the subject of sick comments such as “Ugh, this woman stinks!”... I assure you this is fact, not fiction.

I, Murasaki Hyakuro, am one such practitioner of this vulgar dumpster diving. Over sixteen years of scavenging, I’ve seen countless fellow practitioners (comrades, rather) in various locations throughout Tokyo and its suburbs–as numerous as the horse shit at Fuchu Racecourse is.

Ah, yes.

Every night, in every city, at every hour, lurk the Dust Hunters.

Your trash is their target.

Be Utterly Selfish

This book is the first and last act of kindness from me, a bastard who couldn’t care less about others.

To all you suckers out there: If you keep living like this, you’re not just eight or nine times out of ten–you’re ten outta ten times fucked. You’ll spend your whole life pretending to be this proper, well-behaved version of yourself, obsessing over meaningless appearances and social standing, lying to yourself the entire way. At best, you’ll just pointlessly grow old and die.

To avoid living such a worthless life, there’s only one thing I, as a bastard, want to tell you:

Do whatever you want to do.

That’s the point. And don’t pay society any mind, of course.

Face your desires completely honestly and think carefully about what you really want to do. Murder? Rape? World domination? Whatever. It’s no exaggeration to say that anyone who can answer the question immediately has already been saved.

If you have a desire you’d give your life for, just charge straight ahead toward making it happen. Don’t worry about inconveniencing others. If you get crushed by ethics or common sense, then that’s just how it was meant to be. For better or worse, the ones who shaped history, who contributed to human progress through groundbreaking research and innovation–every last one of them was a devil-may-care bastard who did whatever the hell they wanted, without a second thought for anyone else.

As long as you’re born a human being in this world, you should do what you love, however you wanna do it.

Read any history textbook and you’ll see: “justice” never triumphs in this world. The victors just arrogantly claim “justice” for themselves. Even if the legitimacy of the losers is evaluated by future historians, they’re merely a fart in the wind. As long as we exist in this world, we have no choice but to keep winning if we don’t want to be miserable losers.

Anyway, if you know exactly what you want to do, fight for it, win it, and just go for it. Those who know what they want are already saved enough.

The problem is with folks who, even if they’re told to do what they wanna do, don’t really know what it is they want to do themselves. Most of the young people reading this probably fall into that category.

They should try thinking in terms of process and elimination.

What don’t you want to do? What do you hate?

Even if you don’t know what you want to do or what to aim for, you probably have a few things you dislike. Write them down on paper. You’ll have plenty. Some young folks might write things like “violence, injustice, corruption,” while others may write “love, friendship, trust” – whatever floats your boat.

Don’t worry about how long it takes. This isn’t gonna be on the test. Once you’ve written everything down, go back and read each item aloud.

Hate it with all your might. Disparage it with genuine, seething hatred. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it until the paper burns. Then transcribe that hatred into your real life. Avoiding things you dislike or don’t want to do can lay the groundwork for pursuing what you truly want someday.

Don’t do things you don’t want to do, even if it costs you your life.

Living that way alone is remarkable. People can achieve salvation by doing just that.

And while you live strongly, avoiding what you don’t want to do as much as possible, take your time searching for what you do want to do. There’s no need to rush if it doesn’t come easily. Even for me, realizing my mission as a “monster” was a fairly recent development. Among my comrades, there’s a guy who agonized and struggled for over thirty years, only to finally realize, “Actually, I never wanted to do anything at all.” He now indulges in slumber as his supreme pleasure, dreaming constantly of the life just out of his reach as he quietly plods through work. That, too, is as good a dream as any.

It’s fine if you don’t know what you want to do right now. First, peel away and crush each lie you’ve told yourself for the sake of others. One by one. Lighten your load bit by bit and enjoy life. Life is nothing more than a lie without fun.

Be thoroughly faithful to your desires. Be utterly selfish.

This book serves as an introduction to such a devilish way of life. One of my greatest joys is dumpster diving.

The Advantages of Devilish Thinking

To the average person, dumpster diving probably seems like nothing more than a survival tactic for the homeless. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Depending on how you look at it, dumpster diving is an act of hacking that reveals vast amounts of secrets and personal data. There’s also the imaginative aspect, where you can delve deep into the inner world of the person who discarded their trash based on what you find.

I guarantee this much: if you keep engaging in dialogue with scavenged trash while exercising your imagination and wild fantasies, you will inevitably gain empathy–an understanding of humanity and those around you. That’s the main reason I keep harping on about dumpster diving.

Circling back to the topic of pursuing whatever you want to pursue, as long as you, the reader, are human, it is absolutely certain that other humans will be involved in your pursuits. Therefore, empathy is fundamental. Don’t misunderstand– dumpster diving does not a devilish lifestyle make.

Through my own garbage scavenging, I want everyone to feel my “devilish” way of thinking. Engage in dumpster diving–an act most consider the lowest of deeds–and roam the streets at midnight as a sacred homeless person. Observing your city and society from the lowest vantage point reveals things previously unseen. Even complete strangers in daily life, seemingly unrelated to you, can evoke a sense of kinship through scavenging.

How much can one learn from “mere” dumpster diving?

That is the theme of this book.
