Blog 10 - Progress

04/23/2023 - 10:25 pm EST

ヤッホー!久しぶりですね。I just finished making a few changes to this site. Including, but not limited to:

  • Expanded the height of the comment box
  • Updated the "Translation" page
  • Posted download links for Tsui no Sora and Suki Suki Daisuki
  • Updated contact info

I started posting little updates on Cohost instead of here. I'm never ever going to abandon the Denpa Archive, but this site is more suitable for major updates, scans, completed projects, and download links. The Cohost blog is for translation progress and silly thoughts. The Denpa Archive is nearing 1 year old... how exciting!! Thank you all for your kind comments and support. Let's all love denpa.

Blog 9 - Update

8/6/2022 - 12:44 am EST

English: I finally finished my last week of summer university courses. This semester was rough. The content itself wasn't the problem, but I couldn't find the motivation to work on assignments. I also developed an aversion to going to physical classes. The university I go to is dense with people, even during summer semesters. It was just too stressful to go in person sometimes... I think I'm going to take a little break from university, at least for a semester.

I opened the document I had written up of the Jisatsu 101 script, and I found that Part 3 of the playthrough was already fully translated. That was a pleasant surprise. I'm working on subtitling the footage now.

Blog 8 - Doujinshi

6/11/2022 - 6:12 pm EST

The JPN yen is really weak right now so I might have taken advantage of that... I ordered a shit ton of Hypnosis Mic doujinshi. Around 30 or so books. I'm particularly excited about snagging a copy of わるいこどもたち。I was worried that I'd never be able to read the whole thing in full...

I've been slacking on translating because of school and work. I can't wait to dive back into translating denpa vns though. I haven't abandoned the project, I promise!

Blog 7 - Busy Busy

5/29/2022 - 9:32 pm EST

I had a busy day today. I woke up around 7 to catch up on my homework before the deadline (tonight at 12am), and after finishing, I went out to a local flea market to play DDR. I spent $10 on tokens, and I ended up having the machine to myself for almost 2 hours. I was one of the few people there, and the guy working there was nice enough to turn up the volume of the cabinet for me when I asked. There was a booth selling games and anime-related stuff, so I checked it out. To my surprise, I found all 4 volumes of the Serial Experiments Lain DVDs from 1998. I got all of them, because what are the chances?

I'm sure that scans exist out there of the contents, but I'm gonna scan them anyways and upload them here.

Blog 6 - Site Updates

I know it may be too early to tell, but I think I've accomplished everything I need to with the site layout. All that's left is writing up tutorials, scanning the rest of Dolis, and other media-related uploads. The bones of this site are where I'd like them to be now :)

Blog 5 - University

5/24/2022 - 6:44 am EST

I skipped school yesterday because I couldn't wake up in the morning. I did a good chunk of my Japanese homework at home. It was easy, but I feel bad for skipping. I haven't done any in-person schooling since very late 2019-early 2020. Everything transitioned online, and I worked through most of my AA from home. I'm slowly adjusting to going out more. Nearly every day. I found myself really burnt out by the first week alone. School, study in the library, work, come home.

My girlfriend told me it'd be okay if I focused more on school and less on trying to entertain her when I come home. That's something I struggled with a lot in my last relationship. My ex put a lot of pressure on me to keep him happy and entertained. He wasn't happy when I had school or work for extended periods of time.

In a way, I'm adjusting to multiple things at once. Training myself to take on IRL school and work at the same time, while reminding myself that it's okay to be burnt out and quiet with my girlfriend when we're together. She's really gentle and understanding. I'm still getting used to that - I haven't had a healthy relationship in so long. I can relax now.

Anyways. I ended up being so nervous about missing school again that I woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep. The library opens at 7, so I guess I'll get dressed and head to campus.

Blog 3 - In Hindsight

I've been having somewhat of a creative renaissance lately.

While I haven't been drawing as much as I used to, I've been sewing and making patches, getting into more visual novels, starting new translation/archiving projects, building this site, etc, etc... I think I can attribute all of this to my girlfriend. She's really supportive of me. My last partner wasn't nearly as supportive. It's not like he would outwardly tell me that my interests suck, but he'd make comments about other peoples' hobbies, which would make me insecure about my own. I didn't want to do anything "lame", y'know?

I realize that this is a problem of my own creation. The way I internalized his comments wasn't his fault. But it's nice to be dating someone now that's so engrained in the same creative cultures as I am. She doesn't scoff at the things I like, and she's always encouraging me. I love her a lot. I don't think this project would have gone anywhere without her. I'm really, really happy.

Blog 2 - More Whining

5/20/2022 - 10:46 am EST

The main reason why I built this website is because there isn't a centralized place to find files of old denpage.

If a visual novel company is up in running in the current year, then I always 100% stand by purchasing an official copy of the game. Visual novel companies deserve all the financial support they can get!

But if a game is decades old, isn't supported on current OS, and isn't available for purchase (for a reasonable amount of money), pirating is the only option. Especially if the company behind the game is defunct! Finding downloads for Odeon, Jisatsu 101, and Shizuku was such a hassle. Whenever I tried reaching out to those in the community for help, the response from them was a resounding "Ask around and I'm sure you'll find it", or "My friend got it for me".

Half the time, the people gatekeeping access to these games are the same ones waxing poetic about how great and special they are. They winge on Twitter about how everyone should play their favorite visual novel, but they can't be bothered to upload a copy of their game to share.

There's a particular Twitter user that regularly tweets about how they'd love for their favorite 2001 visual novel to be translated and playable, even if it's just a fan patch. Do they ever stop to think that if the game was more accessible, that would open the doors for potential interest?

Speaking of which, DMMd was only picked up by Jast Blue because of how hugely popular the English patch was with Western audiences. That patch was floating around the net for free, and so many people fell in love with the game after experiencing it for themselves. While I would argue that people should have bought the Japnese copy and read it with a text hooker and DeepL, I think it's safe to say that this rule wouldn't apply to 20-year-old games from dead companies.

I hate the perception of 18+ visual novels in the west.

It's so difficult to talk to the unitiated about visual novels, because they always reduce them down to nothing more than "porn games". Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some games out there that were made with the purpose of being pornography, but there are plenty of great titles out there that are swept under the rug by people that are unfamiliar with visual novels, just because there are in-game sex scenes. The biggest example that comes to mind is DRAMAtical Murder. It's a stellar game about a 23 year old guy that bands together with a group of undesirables (and Koujaku, I guess) to kill the billionaire that's aiming to price all the island's working class out of their homes. The music is kick-ass, the character designs and voice acting are by far the best that Nitro+ has to offer, and there are some really tense, climactic moments that make each route memorable.

But when you ask the average person if they'd give DRAMAtical Murder a shot, they'd say something along the lines of, "Isn't that a gay porn game?"

It's so frustrating!! There are sex scenes, yes, but they're brief, and it takes HOURS of playing to stumble upon them in the first place! I don't see people calling Game of Thrones "The Straight Porn Show" or anything, and I'd bet money that Game of Thrones shows way more dick and balls than DMMd ever did. What gives??

Ugh. This is why I don't tell IRLs about my interests. No wonder visual novel communities are so small...
